191. antichange

When we're young and get hurt, mommy or daddy (or a guardian) puts a bandaid on our booboo and kisses it to make us feel better (if we're lucky). If only things could be so easy once we grow up. I feel so depressed these days. I cry at night. I haven't cried in a while. But now I can't stop. I guess all these tears have been storing up inside of me.

I kept saying that I would take him on a walk with my dog (yes, this topic never gets old, eh?). But each day, I would put it off. Now it's too late. I just watched Elizabethtown a while back. I didn't really like the movie but the message kind of hit hard. Yet I didn't do anything about it.

My mom told me once that I was always a little slow growing up. I think I still am. For example, it took me extra long to learn how to swim, ride a bicycle: just everything. Although, in my defense, the only reason why it took so long for me to stay seated on a bike is that I was trying to ride with a flat tire. >_< But the point is that it takes me a long for things to set. Maybe I'm just stubborn (even with learning). I know I should change but it's so hard. It took me a while to get to where I am now. I think I just don't like changes. I really detest change: even if it's good for me. But once I adapt to the changes, I'm fine. It's the intermediate stage that's difficult for me. I don't know what would make it easier.

190. sad

I was at the store today buying some seeds to plant in his burial spot and saw all the Easter products. When I was little, I wasn't the best egg hunter. My brother would find all the eggs and I would be dejected. So they started putting eggs near my bird's cage or on top of it: somewhere I could find it. My brother rarely ventured near him because he was afraid of being bitten. I always took care of him so I had no such qualms. I think those were the only eggs I ever found. My brother always beat me to the other ones.

He loved eating apples. I tried to find a tree to plant but I couldn't find any. I guess it's too cold. Whenever we chopped apple slices (usually in the evening), he would ask to have some too. :] He hasn't been speaking as much the past few years. I guess all the changes had something to do with that. He wasn't around people as much (he used to be by the front door). In a way, he was like a guard bird. :) He would talk whenever he heard someone walking up the stairs. He even imitated the squeaking of the door. After the move, he continued to make that same sound. After we got our dog, he learned how to call out her name after a week. He was such a loyal pet. :(**** I think his safe place was taken away from him. He was away from his family.

I guess it's hard for me because I have regrets about the past few years. I don't think he was treated as well as he deserved. I feel horrible. I think this guilt and sadness is keeping me up at night. I also still can't get his image out of my mind. I hate thinking that he may have suffered in his final moments.

I'm not religious. I don't have a faith. I wonder where he is now. I only hope that he's in a better place. All dogs go to heaven. I hope all birds do too. :]

187. what happens when i'm sleepy

When I left the building, my friend said he would be leaving soon too. I was going to wait to leave with him but I needed to use the bathroom so I said farewell and went on my merry way. On my way out, a guy waved at me and I waved back because I thought it was him. But afterwards, I thought "hmm, he doesn't look like that!" It was dark. >_< And he was far away so I couldn't see his face. But that was definitely not him. >_< Who was I waving at?

Worse yet, I ran a red light! I was preparing to stop but I noticed the car behind me inching close. I was afraid I would get hit so I just continued. >_< I really hope I don't get a ticket for this. >_< I can't afford it. But I also couldn't afford to have more back problems. I guess the fine will be better than another back injury. But I don't want a point (or is it two?) on my driving record. :( I noticed that the lady driver was talking on the cell phone. Maybe she wasn't paying attention. She was tailing me! >_< I wonder if I can get out of the ticket. >_< Probably not. Maybe I won't even get a ticket?

184. super watch!

I have been walking around watch-less for the past few days. The thought occurred to me this morning as I was out on a walk that it could very well be safely tucked in one of my pockets (since I have forgotten to take things out of my pockets many a time before). A split second later I regrettably remembered that I had a load of laundry in the washer. When I got home to transport the wet clothes from the washer to the dryer, I didn't notice anything shiny, so I breathed a sigh of relief. I went to retrieve the contents from the dryer and...there it was! I was worried that it wouldn't work anymore. But it's fine and dandy! My watch survived a washing and drying. I'm surprised. :-o

Whilst doing the laundry, I watched The Island. About a week ago, I saw the beginning of it where Jordan Two-Delta and Lincoln Six-Echo have their exchange in the mess hall. It was entertaining. ^_^ I didn't actually know anything about the movie when I watched it so it was like I was one of the characters. ^_^ Scarlett Johansson was paired with Ewan McGregor in The Island (and she meets Steve Buscemi again...I liked Ghost World ^_^). Apparently, she's dating Richard Archer of Hard-Fi. :-o

183. tutee

The mother of one of my former tutees called me one day because she wasn't happy with her's son's current tutor. I agreed to meet and I spent an hour talking to him to evaluate his progress. I asked him to show me his new home since they had moved since the last time I saw him. He had gone skiing the day before so he showed me the photographs and videos from his trip. There's a girl in a lot of his photos and since I'm a curious cat I, of course, asked about her. It turns out that it's his girlfriend and he requested that I don't tell his mother because his parents don't want him to date. :-o "Why is he telling me this?," I wonder. "Why is he putting me in such a position?"

When I first met him, he was a recent emigrant and his English was lacking. He was a little shy and a little awkward but he was always polite. But he didn't seem interested in learning. He directed his interest at anything but; he was an avid Jerry Springer spectator. Flash forward a couple years and I find the same boy but not quite as polite and not quite so shy. People still flock to the U.S. in search of better lives for their children. They believe that their children can be better educated and lead prosperous lives in the "land of the free"...

I asked him to write a persuasive essay and to e-mail it to me. Before I left, I asked him how long he expected to take and he quickly quipped that he could complete the assignment in two hours. My inbox is empty... :S

182. nightmare

Last night I had this horrible dream in which I was being gunned down. I couldn't go near windows because someone was always lurking there. When I escaped through the door (and I flew), I was being pursued by two men.

The details are fuzzy but I woke up feeling relieved even though I knew it was a dream. I know I can't fly. It was just so strange. I haven't had a dream where I flew away from something evil...since...I was about ten. I used to have a recurring nightmare in which a lady on a broomstick would chase me. I could never see her face. It's scarier when you don't know who your pursuer is. I would fly around the neighborhood and end up hiding in a nursery (the plant kind, not the children kind) or in a neighbor's home. I felt so free being able to fly...fly away from all my problems. Of course, that was only in dream land... ^_^

178. a new year

I feel better now. Had some pain recently and went back to the doctor. I think I need to take better care of myself. But anyway, I've been really busy. Had to run around and do stuff for the New Year. It's always busy at this time of the year. Have to visit people and prepare a lot of things. After all the fuss, I took a nice nap (which wasn't necessarily long, but restful). I haven't gotten a chance to try the recipes in the new book my friend gave me. I've marked a bunch of things I think I can make but I haven't even had a chance to go to the grocery store to get fresh produce. I can't get enough of this song. It's so happy. I also like Hard-Fi and I want to go see them (because they're going to be around) but I can't get away and I don't know if I can handle long car trips. Doctor said I should take it easy (easier than I have been). I'm listening to some new bands though. Oh! I saw some movies I really like (...oh, but that was a while ago)...Crash was great. It's a little depressing but it makes you think. And I got really involved with the movie. I am usually not like that. I like most movies but they don't really get to me...you know? ^_^ I saw an advertisement seeking a web designer to promote bands and it's something I really would like to do. It's a pro bono gig but I wouldn't mind putting the time into it. Anyway, we'll see how that turns out.

Here's one of the pictures from the Christmas show. It's one of the few that actually turned out semi-satisfactory. It was difficult since my camera isn't necessarily high-end, we were sitting so far away, and I didn't want to disrupt the show by using my flash. So here it is: the birth of Christ in a manger ^_^:

173. dogs in the news

Here are some pictures of fourteen-year-old Sam, the Chinese crested dog, who won "The World's Ugliest Dog Contest" for the third year in a row at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California:

Above all, what makes Sam special is that "he's so sweet," Lockhee says. Of her four dogs, Sam is her favorite.

"I've never had a dog this in love with me," she says, "And shortly after I rescued him (I took him in as a rescue), I was diagnosed with cancer. I had to be in radioactive isolation, where you're away from people for almost a week. But they let me take one dog. And I chose Sam. And he just made that time so much fun. He's so crazy. I've just never been this close to a dog before."

The two enjoyed lounging and watching television. Sam never left her except to visit the side yard through his doggy door. The two have been inseparable ever since. Now Sam cries when Lockheed isn't around.

And we have Toby, a four-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, watches the news while he runs on the treadmill. Aww.

172. insomniac

I haven't been sleeping so well. I think I've probably slept ten hours all week. I'm tired but I sit in bed wide awake. People are beginning to notice that my eyes are bloodshot. Well, aside from that and being sick once again, things are going pretty well. I just shipped off some Christmas packages to friends who live far away (and I would have done it sooner but I only recently wrapped them). I hope they get there in time. Also went to drop off some things for the kiddies. I got the little girl a jacket but now that I see her, I wonder if it will fit. She's less than a year old but she already wears clothes a two-year-old would wear. :-o Oh my. I got the jacket a while ago so I think I've gone past the return date. >_< I hope it fits...because I can't exchange it now :-o. Went to some early Christmas parties last week and did a little gift exchange. I ended up with something shiiiiiiny. Me likes the shinies. :D Met up with an old buddy and caught up on things. We have to get together more often. Will meet with other friends next week as soon as they arrive. But, before then, I will watch Narnia. I read those books when I was little (and who hasn't?) but I haven't re-read them in a long time now. I think I still remember the story though...After the movie will be a Christmas show by a local church. Weeee. I better stock up on tissues before I go: I'd rather not have a streaming river running down my face ^_^. We intend on getting there early so I'll upload some music on my mp3 player to entertain us while we wait. I recently (well, it was November, but that's still recent ^_^) got the Rosenrot album by Rammstein ♥. I like all their albums but I think I still like Herzeleid the most. I wonder when the next album will be released...

I'm pretty excited that The Da Vinci Code is making its way into the theatres. May 16, 2006 is the big day. :-o I've been expecting a movie since I read it and it looks like it's finally going to happen. I just rewatched National Treasure and went through all (well, maybe not alllllll) the games. ^_^ I like DVDs like that (with lots of bonus material and fun games). :D Well, maybe not "just"...lost power so this is a bit dated. Seems like the power is going out at a greater frequency...

167. thanksgiving part deux

Just got back from the airport after seeing someone off. I saw another one of those marquees that show the estimated time it takes to reach certain key destinations. It was fairly accurate; the estimated time was ten minutes and it took us seven minutes (but are they really helpful)? I suppose if you're stuck in traffic and the estimate is incredibly high, then you can take the next exit and find another route...

Now that Thanksgiving is officially over (in the United States...Canada's Thanksgiving was in October...don't know about other countries), I can start playing Christmas music! I just got two Christmas compilation CDs. :D One is of the London Symphony Orchestra. That reminds me of the gem I found the other day! I found a recording of The London Symphony Orchestra playing the Super Mario Brothers theme song! I think it's so cute. ^_^

This isn't my tree (I would rather more green were visible and am more simplistic with my decorations) but I do like the blue glass motif.

Today was Thanksgiving Part Deux. The turkey turned out surprising well. I say surprisingly because it started out not so well. >_< But...anyway...^_^ I took pictures of the process. I made sure my hands were clean when doing so. I felt a little queasy while preparing the turkey with the basting and the handling. I definitely prefer preparing vegetarian dishes over carnivorous dishes. Speaking of carnivores:

Apparently, this dinosaur has a motion sensor and possibly an audio sensor too because I'm told that it will seek you out and will try to bite you. Your only salvation is to make noise. ^_^

The heat is finally on. The weather has been cold but bearable: up until this point. Yesterday, I walked around with my knit hat, scarf, and sock slippers and was still cold. I couldn't stand it today. While it's not turned on high, I still feel better. The walls and roof are not well insulated so heat doesn't stay inside so well...oh, not to mention the windows, doors, and floor. >_<

My attempt to relearn knitting is not going so well. I'm having trouble getting past even the first row. Maybe if I just continue, it will magically start looking pretty? Or perhaps the project I'm attempting is too complicated. It involves cabling and I found some instructions on Knitting for Dummies on how to do it without a cable needle (because I can't find one in the craft stores!) but if I can't even do the fundamental stitches, how am I supposed to cable?

166. after thanksgiving shopping

Thursday evening, I went to a friend's for Thanksgiving dinner. I was to provide mashed potatoes and dessert. I made the mashed potatoes with some suggestions from the culinarydelight community and I decided on a pumpkin loaf for dessert. We're all not really into sweets although I am a big fan of pumpkin pie - I would end up eating the entire thing myself. After eating, a friend called asking if I wanted to go shopping.

I was a bit reluctant at first because I've grown wary of shopping in large crowds. But, in the end, I relented. She had a jacket that we bought on my credit card that she wanted to return and I needed to go holiday shopping anyway...When deciding on what time to go, I half-seriously suggested 05:00 since I had seen commercials that there would be sales from 5 to 11. We compromised and decided to meet at her home at 07:30. I was even worried that I would not wake up in time.

But no need to worry. I got up from a restless sleep at 05:00 and couldn't fall back asleep. I decided that I would check out some stores before meeting her. But there weren't very many sales (at least not for the things I wanted to get). When we arrived at the mall, there were already many people there. There weren't very many discounts and we were both disappointed. Then she remembered that there were some good deals at Best Buy and we were going to go there after a visit to Aeropostale. At first, we were going to skip Aeropostale and go directly to Best Buy but it's a good thing we didn't because everything in the store was 50% off. The line was incredibly long but at least it was warm and cozy. ^_^ At Best Buy, she wanted to get DVDs (she saw some for $5 and some for $10) but when we got there, we saw no such thing. Maybe they were all sold out. :-o I made a beeline for the music section. But, again, no good deals. They were sold at normal prices. Then she remembered that there was a SanDisk mp3 player for $40. I would have gotten one too but they were (unsurprisingly) all gone.

Dejected and hungry, we decided to fill our tummies. So we went to Tony Roma's. I've only ever been there once before. The calamari there was very good! I normally don't really enjoy it because it's a bit chewy and not very tasty. The entrées were good too. She got the mahi mahi and I got the monterrey chicken. Our waiter, Joseph, was excellent too. He was friendly, polite, and prompt with the food and he refilled our glasses when they were low. I guess that's the kind of service you expect to have when you dine out. But, unfortunately, that's often not the case. So we made sure to tip him well.

We also went to the crafts store to pick up some supplies for holiday wrapping and some yarn for my hobby. I still haven't gone beyond the flat and straight simplicity of scarves ^_^ though I plan on starting to knit. I "learned" it a few years ago but I never made anything. I'm going to try making a scarf with a cute cable design I found. I hope it doesn't turn out looking too sloppy as this will be my first knitting project. ^_^

164. digital prints

I ordered some digital prints for two-day service and I asked when it would be ready. The attendant said it would be ready by Monday (yesterday). The following day I made another order for my aunt and the attendant told me that it would be ready by Tuesday (today). After I was told that, and as I was leaving, the attendant from the previous day walked up and started to tell me that the machine I was ordering the prints from is for a two-day service but stopped when he realized that he had seen me only the day before.

I decided to pick up the pictures today instead of going in both Monday and Tuesday in order to save myself the trouble of driving in horrible traffic for two days. However, the second order I placed was not ready yet. The (same) attendant said, "You should have used the one-hour service." No...if the photo service is a two-day service, it should be ready in two days! I placed my order early in the morning and I confirmed the completion date. :-S Gar. Why why why? Now I'm told that I should call tomorrow after 15:00 to see if the pictures are in the store and that if they're not, they will be ready Friday. :-O

Now I'm looking for other places to take my business to. I'm trying to remember the ones I've heard of:

ofoto

shutterfly

snapfish...

Hmm, and Google also brings up:

bestcolorphoto

imagestation

clark color labs

fujifilm

york photo

But which ones are good? I guess I could try them all out...Or I could buy the equipment to print them myself...

163. lights out

There was a power outage in the middle of the night. At 02:22 (at least it wasn't 03:00 ^_^), the power went out and the UPC (only I didn't know that was the source at the time) started beeping. When my efforts to fall back asleep failed, I went outside to the control box to try to manually turn the power back on. But I noticed, as I was outside, that the entire block was completely dark. I was reminded of Dumbledore on Privet Drive. ^_^ When I returned home, I was greeted by the annoying beeping. This went on for nearly an hour before I got up to fumble for my earplugs. Soon thereafter, I fell asleep. Power was restored at around 06:00. I was told that one of the sources of incessant beeping originated from the UPC in my room >_< and that it was turned off.

Today, my cell phone battery completely drained and I was puzzled for a bit since I had plugged it in the night before. This rather inconvenienced me since I was relying on the phone to organize a visit to the theatre to watch The Goblet of Fire. But the real problem was that my phone book is stored in there. I only remember a handful of numbers and the number that I needed was not stored in my memory. >_<

But, luck was with me. I did end up watching Harry Potter. :D It wasn't exactly as I envisioned it but I liked it all the same. Some elements of the story were very different and there was at least one scene that I didn't care for but the special effects were amazing.

162. tod williams billie tsien architects

The other day, I watched a presentation by Billie Tsien of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects LLP. Her firm submitted a proposal to design the performing arts complex on the World Trade Center site. These are some of the design proposals. But the structure that I was most interested in was the one for the Snow Show in Finland. It looks like so much fun. They're also going to design something for the winter Olympics.

160. flora and fauna

So last weekend, I helped someone look for trees for a landscaping project. I brought my dog along for the ride and while there, several dogs tried desperately to get her attention. I snapped a picture of one of the cuter ones which I will post here. Doesn't it look like he's a little kid with white hair? *giggles* My friend has a dog very similar to this one but I've never seen him standing on his hind legs.

We bought the trees and I spotted some lovely orchids. They must be a hybrid because I've never seen them before (or is the coloring fooling me)? They look like phalaenopsis orchids though:

After purchasing the plants, I went for a walk here:

This is where the dog attacked her. He tried to sniff her butt first and then he progressed to chasing her. It was quite a scene. I ended up scooping her up in my arms and he jumped me. :-o

The fish didn't seem overly ecstatic after being cooped up in a small bowl for a weekend, so on Monday, my friend took them and transferred them to her big tank. This is them in a small tank:

I went shopping today and when I left the store, two boys came up to us (another lady was also exiting the store) and he told me that he was raising money for basketball uniforms. I said I didn't have any cash on me and apologized. He then asked if I would donate my "radio" and asked me if it was an mp3 player. :-o At that point, I retreated.

This week, I started crocheting again. I have a blanket I started...wow, seven years ago and I still haven't finished. I guess it doesn't help that I had a six year hiatus. I worked on it off and on for a couple months but not since then.

158. miss piggy

This has been a tiring week. Monday was especially bad. I even missed multiple calls because I was so engrossed in what I was doing. The following day, the same people called to ask me what was wrong with me. In fact, nothing was wrong; I was just holed up in my cave again.

I baked some banana nut bread which turned out really well. I haven't made it in ages. But since it turned out well, I feel like making something else. Maybe I'll make another pizza soon. I think I have some basil in the refrigerator so maybe I can make a pesto sauce. I've been eating a lot lately. :-o Indian buffet (the kheer was excellent), lots of salad, and the most delicious tiramisu ever. >_< Today, I had a Vietnamese pastry for breakfast, soba with tsuyu and nori for lunch, and an insalata caprese for dinner. To my friend's chagrin, I snapped pictures of our food as it arrived. The insalata caprese was just so pretty:

This CD (James Blunt's Back to Bedlam) is really good (I also currently like Michael Buble's Babalu). :D I tried streaming audio but I'm not sure if it works yet. I always thought it would be nice to have my own radio station. Now I can! I'm not sure who would tune in though. ^_^

157. happy halloween!

I'm actually dressing up this year. I haven't done so in years but with a little encouragement, I decided to. :) I'm even tempted to go trick-or-treating. ^_^ I don't suppose my teeth would like that much. Perhaps I ought to pass. The god-daughter is dressing up as Tinkerbell. :D After our trip to Disneyland (and perhaps even before then), she's been obssessed with Tink. :-o I haven't actually seen the costume but I'm certain it will be adorable. I'm not sure what the cousins will be. I can't believe it's been a year already. The year before, I went pumpkin-hunting with the little one. He and his friend had me carry their pumpkins because they got too heavy. :-o I think they were taking advantage of me! I wonder what kind of pumpkin he got this year...Here's one I got: ^_^

Doesn't it look so perfect? So round. And orange. :D Makes me want to just stuff it in my mouth and eat it. Errr...

156. disastrous

To my dismay, I knocked over a glass of pomegranate juice on my keyboard today. I have never done that before (err, that I can remember) and I will purchase a spill-proof cup as soon as possible to avoid another incident. In addition to ruining my recently purchased keyboard, I also managed to splatter juice all over my monitor, papers, bills >_<, watch, camera, etc etc..., oh, my clothes :-o. Later that evening, I ate fruit at my desk:

I never learn. >_< No messes though.

Weee, my new DVD burner just arrived. Check it out. ^_^

I installed it myself! This is a BenQ DW1640 16x DVD±RW which I will use until I get a DVD-RAM drive. It came with Nero 6 software too. :D Now I can get all this junk...er...stuff off of my hard drive! Well, that will be another day. The discs haven't arrived yet.

154. surprise

I ran a search on Google for a screenname I used to use and I found an entry on a message board. It was strange to see something that I wrote four years ago. I coudn't even tell it was me. :-o
